Experience the Freedom of Sailing with VISA-GB
This past June, VISA-GB embarked on an inspiring sailing expedition along the scenic Scottish coast. Four yachts, crewed by a diverse group of sighted volunteers and blind and visually impaired individuals, set sail from Largs for a week of unforgettable adventure. This inclusive voyage fostered camaraderie and embodied VISA-GB’s core mission: empowering those with visual impairments to experience the thrill and freedom of sailing.
Navigating New Horizons
The flotilla charted a course around the captivating Isle of Aran, providing ample opportunities for social interaction and shared experiences. True to VISA-GB’s ethos, everyone was encouraged to actively participate in sailing the yachts, regardless of their experience level. Under the expert guidance of seasoned skippers and crew, participants embraced the challenges and joys of navigating the open water.
Unexpected Discoveries Ashore
A weather-induced pause in Campbelltown led to an enriching visit to a local distillery, adding an unexpected dimension to the journey. Further enriching the experience, the group indulged in the restorative powers of the Port Avadi Spa, where a hot tub offered breathtaking mountain vistas.
A Young Sailor’s Testament
One of our young visually impaired sailors eloquently captured the transformative power of the experience:
“Oh, what a holiday… What a wonderful time, sailing aboard the Calico Moon! I enjoyed every second of it, from Largs to Campbelltown, to Port Avadi, to Inverkip, and so much more… Thank you all for a truly wonderful time. Now that I’m back at work, I really do miss it—and I’m actually rather proud of myself because I flew on my own for the first time! Sod the trains, I’m airborne now!!!, A massive thank you, as ever, to VISA-GB, and all the sighted volunteers. You give us freedom that we don’t get anywhere else, and without you none of this would happen.
Until next time, shipmates!!!”
